The aim of the Horticultural Society of Nigeria (HORTSON) is to promote the advancement and development of the science and art of all branches of horticulture in Nigeria.
The HORTSON has over 500 individual members drawn from all over Nigeria. It has become a major source of up-to-date information on horticultural crop research in Nigeria. HORTSON encourages the development of national cooperation, bringing together scientific and technical professionals to stimulate, facilitate and co-ordinate research and scientific activities on a national scale.
The day to day conduct of the society is performed by the HORTSON Secretariat based at the National Horticultural Research Institute, P.M.B. 5432, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.
The Society’s policies are guided by the Board of Trustees.
The Council, which meets quarterly, sees to the proper running of the Society in accordance to the constitution of the Society. Council members are elected every two years during the Annual General Meeting which holds during annual conferences.
The success of the HORTSON in relation to its effective communication and leadership of national cooperation is largely through Conferences held annually. These are organized locally in any state of the federation, each with a hosting Institution and an organizing local committee. Designed to be self financing, these conferences concentrate on current topical issues in horticulture. Invited speakers present papers, research findings are debated, discussions held, field visits arranged and the editorial sub-committee of the Local Organizing Committee compiles a publication under the title of Conference Proceedings. These proceedings are available at a cost.
The major publication is the Nigerian Journal of Horticultural Science which is a series of scientific technical publications. Articles are available online at African Journal On Line (AJOL). Other means of communication are the Hortmag, and Hortnews. Besides containing a calendar of events, announcements, member’s promotion, different news and forthcoming events, there are discussions on major issues affecting horticulture – all having both National and International dimensions.
A major benefit of HORTSON membership is the privilege of attending HORTSON Conferences annually at discounted rates. The conferences are attended by 250 or more participants from all over the federation. Annual General Meeting of the Society takes place. In addition, there are numerous social gatherings, sight seeing opportunities and the chance to see local horticultural industries during field trips.
The HORTSON is registered in Nigeria as national organisation under the Corperate Affairs Commision(CAC/IT/ NO 33434)
